Sign-Ups for the LAX Airfield Tour Open This Friday at 10am PT

Cranky Dorkfest

As mentioned a couple weeks ago, I’ve partnered with Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) to add a bonus event to Cranky Dorkfest LAX on Saturday, September 7. We’ll be taking a behind-the-scenes airfield bus tour at LAX that morning before the main event begins. Here’s what you need to know if you’re interested.

The first 50 people to RSVP will be given a spot on the bus. We will take 60 RSVPs, because, well, this is an airline thing and overbooking is fun. (No, seriously, I’ll just keep a short waitlist in case of cancellations.)

Sign-ups open at crankyflier.com/dorkfestlax this Friday, July 12 (in two days), at 10am PT/1pm ET. The link will not redirect until that time, so there’s no use in going early.

These are the rules and requirements if you decide to join us:

  • Each person who signs up can bring no more than 1 guest with them – guests should be 6 years of age or older.
  • Your invitation is only good for you and your guests.  If you are unable to attend, you must tell us so that we can reallocate your space.
  • When you sign up, you are agreeing to be at the Flight Path Museum by 9am on September 7 – you can drive and park or take rideshare/taxi.
  • You are required to submit your full name, date of birth, and driver license or passport details for security pre-screening if you wish to take the tour. You will receive a message with instructions on how to provide that information once attendance is confirmed.
  • You may not bring any bags on the bus with you.  There will be storage at the Flight Path Museum.  (Cameras are welcome.)
  • You may be subject to additional security screening.
  • The bus will leave from the Flight Path at 9:30am whether you are on it or not.
  • The bus will return to the Flight Path within an hour.  For those who are going to In-N-Out for the main event and don’t have a car, the bus will then continue on to In-N-Out to drop you off.
  • LAWA may cancel the tour at any time for any reason.

If you have any questions, leave them here in the comments or email me at cf@crankyflier.com.

  1. Man, you are killing me! I’ve been trying to get out there for a Dork fest since forever but I can’t get my schedule to work out. Have a great time. I’m dying of envy … best to you and yours … Rick

    1. HC – The LAX event tends to be more for people who come into town, so Saturdays work better. But the one I did at DFW earlier this year was on a Sunday, and I might consider that for future events elsewhere.

  2. I think this is really all part of some sneaky plan to load test the CrankyFlier servers. Let’s see if we can crash them at 10…

  3. Peter in DEN, Cranky, since you are such a good organizer, how about some nice group rates at a decent hotel around LAX, for the Friday night, 6 Sept…

Or we can camp out in your back yard in Long Beach ??

Flying DEN to LAX on the Sat. morning does not work for the bus tour… at least for my retired life style.

WN non stop flight (Sat.) to LAX departs DEN at 06:00, fare is $ 63. today.

Friday afternoon, evening flights, are $ 91. and $ 99. one way, DEN to LAX on WN, today.

      1. Hey NYC Aviation, thanks for the heads up on hotel room deal. Assuming I get on the bus tour, and CrankyFlier servers don’t crash, I should be joining you on rooftop observation deck, Friday night.

      2. The H Hotel is nice but I do think we should just all go camp out in Brent’s back yard. Front yard too…

  4. Thank you for this notification.  Regretfully, I will not be able to attend.
    Perhaps an other time.

    Sincerly,

  5. Brett,

I’m flying in from STL on WN and arriving at 8:00 scheduled. Would I have time to Uber-it from T1 to the museum? I will be at the In-N-Out by 10:30 or so but am Interested in this since I might have the time. If not, see you at regular Dorkfest.

    1. Chuck – Oh yeah. If you’re on time, you should have no trouble getting there by 9. You might want to just walk away from Terminal 1 toward Sepulveda/Century and have a rideshare pick you up there. Or you could do it from the terminal. Either way, you should have plenty of time.

    1. Mike – Indeed, demand has been high and my host seems to be struggling, but people are getting through so keep trying

      1. And I guess that’s it… I refreshed the page on multiple browsers (and my phone) from 9:50 am to now.

I wish the host could’ve kept up. Would’ve felt better to have lost out due to not being one of the first 50 vs. being let in randomly by some overloaded server.

I recommend next time doing a simple lottery system.

        1. This is a small business without an IT dept. You have experienced the equivalent of a denial of service attack–too many people trying to sign up at once. Cranky has posted on his web site how to sign up for the wait list. Please do not post anything unkind as this a free event organized with a sense of community that is too rare these days. Long live dorkfest.

  6. Hi! I see the link should be up, but it won’t bring me to the page without a 505 error. Is it full or are the servers overrun?

    Thanks!

  7. Good morning –

Your link to sign up for the door doesn’t appear to be working.

    Interested in 2 spaces.

  8. Was there a denial of servIce attack on the Dorkfest LAX tour sign up?
