Topic of the Week: Porn on a Plane

Ryanair chief Michael O’Leary is at it again. This time he’s suggesting that he’ll start offering a hotel-style pay per view system on airplanes, porn and all. Will he do it or is this just more of the same old posturing to get some free press? And if he is serious, does that bug you? ]

Air Berlin used to give out Pla yboy on their flights if I remember correctly…

I feel like this is less of a shock to Europeans than it is to Americans…

  2. CS says:

It would only made sense, O’Leary is like the Larry Flint of airline heads (I guess Branson would be the Hugh Hefner…). I think this is just for the PR, but i’m afraid of what’s next since O’Leary seems to aways shock people once or twice a year. “for an extra 150 dollars, the pilot will do a barrel roll.”

  3. I don’t think I would be choosing a seat next to a guy in a trenchcoat…

  4. Crissy says:

Umm, it only bothers me because the guy in the trench coat could be seated next to a kid. I’m a big girl and know how to beat him over the head if he gets fresh with me after getting worked up.

  5. Top Villas says:

Sure this is just a marketing stunt, not sure that they would follow through with this idea!

  6. An airplane is a public space. I hope common sense prevails.

  7. FRANK says:

………once again, FREE ADVERTISEMENT for RyanAir.

  8. HunnerWoof says:

If it doesn’t make sense…it’s probably not true. Typical RyanAir media stunt. And…typical media reaction.

  9. Ryan says:

Forgetting any moral or social objections for a minute, logistically how would you even set this up when you are practically sitting in the lap of your seatmate? It would seem you would have to setup a special section of the plane that is meant for those who wish to purchase porn, but then what happens if I’m bored on my flight in the non porn zone and get the hankering to well you know…watch a video. Just to be clear, I would assume you are only watching, and the separate section would be for privacy reasons, since you would clearly be able to see your neighbors screen.

Also, you’re are not going to fill every seat in that section on every flight, and what happens if you don’t have room for all the passengers, and the only seats left are in the porn zone. Now you have a situation where you either fly the plane less than full leaving revenue on the table, or you are preventing others from enjoying the service they have paid for.

Simply put, this would seem to break the Ryan Air model, and therefore I tend to believe this is a really lame attempt at generating publicity for this horrible horrible airline.

    • Hrm put all the restrooms up front, and start assigning the porn seats at the back, and the non-porn seats from the front… Work your way to the middle until they meet..

The FA’s could tell the video system that row 15 is the first non-porn row, and it’d restrict things appropriately.. Guess you could also put in a movable curtain as well..

Although, that does then become a work hazard for the flight attendants.

David Cross has a funny bit on one of his CDs about how strange it is that airport newspaper stores sell pornography. This goes to a whole different level.

  11. The guys an idiot and just says stupid things to get free media coverage. Some people object to big screen Hollywood films that have -A- list actors getting a little too frisky in a sceen, so porn would not be tolerated by most of the passengers and I would think governments of the countries they fly would object also.

  12. Oh wait, is that why he wanted to pull lavs off the planes, to install those little booths like adult book stores have in their place…..lol

FYI, I wouldn’t know about those booths personally, only from a story I read in Readers Digest, “I am Joe’s Adult Bookstore”.

  13. MathFox says:

I think “Best Hollywood Plane Crashes” would be more appropriate to watch in public than porn… ;-)

  14. bdbd says:

There’s a jetBlue joke in here begging to be made…..

  15. Alan says:

Well, since they did away with smoking sections, maybe they’ll start a “trenchcoat” and “non-trenchcoat” section???

  16. Nick says:

The plane to me is my own work capsule where I can actually get some work done – the thought of having hot content at your fingertips (no pun intended) I’d never get anything done!!!

  17. JayB says:

It’s 11-11-11 and Cranky has to get our attention by writing about “Porn on a Plane,” and that weirdo from across the pond. It was only last December, I believe, it was Mr. Cranky getting our attention with his “Airplane Porn” blog. [Google “airplaneporn” and there’s Cranky at the top of the list.]

Will he stop at nothing? Well, questions. Are there any FAA/DOT rules about bringing porn on board, reading it, watching it? Not that I would want to do anything like that, but…! If nothing in the 14 CFR book yet, could make for an interesting docket and rulemaking. Exhibits?

  18. Micah Child says:

I do enjoy porn, in a healthy way, but on a plane in coach… not an appropriate location. Perhaps in those private cubes in 1st class on emirates may be more, appropriate place….. but that could still be pushing it.

  19. Axelsarkis says:

Classic FR ad-grab. Of course, the media bites hook, line & sinker.
