Cranky on the Web: United Only Likes You If You Have the Credit Card, Spirit in Vegas

Spirit Airlines may end Las Vegas flights from several West Coast cities3 News Las Vegas

The word “may” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that title, but I did speak with 3 News about where Spirit’s priorities appear to lie these days. And they are not in Las Vegas. Would it shock me to see Spirit cut those remaining few short-haul flights from Vegas? Not one bit, especially if it shuts the Las Vegas crew base. There’s a lot of weird thinking in the video, especially the part saying that people should buy their Christmas tickets now, but well… I didn’t talk to them about that.

This week on The Air Show, Brian leads us in talking about United’s new MileagePlus earning change. Have the credit card? You are important. You don’t? You are not. It’s yet another move away from actual flying loyalty toward, well, just being a financial services company. Have a listen.

United has been pretty hostile lately. I have the Chase United Presidential Plus Card (no longer available for new accounts) and the fee just jumped from $450 a year to $650 a year. It gets you Club access, but the benefits have been reduced unless you maintain certain spending levels or at least Gold Elite status. Fortunately, I am a Million Mile member and enjoy lifetime Gold Elite status.

I look forward to my next flight on the aviation division of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

Given that J.P. Morgan at one time owned the parent company of the White Star Line, that would be coming full circle.
