A Visit to the Memorial for Alaska 261

Oxnard (in California) is not a household name, but it is a spot I visited as a kid growing up in the San Fernando Valley. It was a quiet place where you could escape to the beach surrounded by agriculture and military, and it felt like a world away. So, we did an extended-family trip this August and that’s when I learned that there’s been a somber addition to the area in the last few decades, a memorial for the victims of Alaska flight 261. I thought it was very well done, so I thought I’d share it here.

Alaska 261 was the infamous jackscrew incident. That was the flight from Puerto Vallarta to San Francisco and on to Seattle on January 31, 2000 that ran into control problems when passing by Los Angeles. After an initial dive that the pilots were able to arrest around 24,000 feet, they did everything in their power to get the airplane over to LAX, but there was nothing they could do to save the airplane. A few minutes later, the entire jackscrew assembly failed due to maintenance problems. The MD-83 went into a steep dive and roll and eventually went inverted. They had nearly stopped the dive once they were upside down, but they couldn’t get it safely on the ground.

The pilots, Captain Ted Thompson and First Officer Bill Tansky, fought a remarkable fight. I can’t imagine there was anything else they could have done in this impossible situation. In the end, they lost the battle and the airplane plunged into the Pacific Ocean between Anacapa Island and Port Hueneme on the mainland (right next to Oxnard), killing all 88 onboard.

In the end, this was found to be a massive maintenance program failure, and Alaska had to make serious reforms, but you can get all the details of that in the NTSB accident report. I want to keep my focus on this memorial.

The families ended up commissioning something to be built in Port Hueneme, the closest point on the mainland to where the accident occurred. The idea was to create a giant sundial on the beach, and we visited on an appropriately gray and gloomy day.

At the entrance to the memorial is a plaque explaining why it’s here. If you come in from the beach as we did, you might be very confused about what you’re seeing.

Around the base of the sundial, you’ll find a plaque for each of the 88 people who died. Here is the crew:

The plaques must have been individually handled, because they aren’t all alike. Most have the victim’s hometown, but some give an age while others give a birthdate. And even the birthdates aren’t always in the same format. For some reason, that non-conformity gave a more personal feel to it.

Probably the most touching feature of this sundial, however, is this little heart-shaped plaque noting the date and time when the aircraft hit the water. Every January 31 at 4:22pm, the sundial casts a shadow over this marker.

I haven’t seen many accident memorials — though Tell City was an adventure — but this one struck me as one of the more thoughtful designs. If you’re ever driving through the area, it’s worth a diversion off the 101 to go and visit.

    Looks like it needs a power spraying. None of our neighbors seem to know this, but we have a memorial to two AA regional flights that crashed near RDU in a park near our home. I’ve told my son that we should take it on as a projec to offer to maintain the memorial.

    I’ve been to Port Hueneme (pronounced Why-nee-me, its an indigenous name.) for a work trip long long ago, sadly I didn’t know about this memorial at the time and I missed visiting it.

    I remember a coworker at a different company who used to work for Alaska Airlines in the catering department, and it always irked him that N963AS was missing from the neatly ordered list of MD-83s.

    Sometimes losses leave strange holes.

    Also of note, the pilots were posthumously awarded the Air Line Pilots Association Gold Medal for Heroism.

    The pilots (and everyone else) were seriously betrayed. There wasn’t anything they could do except ride it down and die. Nightmare fuel.

    Truly an awful time for Alaska Airlines and sister company Horizon Air. Many of the victims of this crash were nonrev employees and family members of AS and QX employees. One aspect of airline accidents that the general public may not know about is how the industry lifts up each other during times like these. I was working for American at SeaTac when this happened. The Alaska ticket counter was overrun with flowers, baskets, and food from the other airlines at SeaTac. Just over a year later on 9/11, the same happened at the American and United counters. Airlines compete with each other for customers, but when the unthinkable happens everyone understands that is could have been them.

    As if the accident weren’t awful enough, when details from the investigation began emerging Alaska was forced to ground the MD-80 fleet for emergency inspections. You could feel the fear and panic from the flying public. Having recently acquired Reno Air, American had a tiny West Coast presence out of SEA to RNO, SJC, and SNA. Customers flooded our counters and gates hoping to move flights, but those planes were booked out for weeks. The ripples from aviation disasters spread wide and deep.

    I remember exactly where I was when I heard this news (over the radio) in Seattle for some reason. It sticks in my consciousness to this day, and is far more prevalent than say AA 587.

    Some aviation incidents really haunt you when you research them and this is one such accident. The flight crew was absolutely heroic in the face of an unwinnable situation, while the AS ground staff was quite unhelpful and basically useless at the very time they were needed most. Everyone on that aircraft went through an unspeakable horror at the end of the ordeal and it never should have happened.

    I’m very happy to see a fitting memorial to remember those poor souls and thank you for sharing it with us.

    Thank you for your thoughtful post about this tragic event. I can’t imagine the horror those passengers and crew went through in their final moments knowing their end was near. May their memories be a blessing to their loved ones.

    This was the kind of accident that makes you sick to your stomach and angry. There was a lot of demons that had to be faced after this happened. I remember watching the Air Emergency (Mayday, Air Crash Investigations) episode on it and it was a difficult watch.
