2022 Flying Summary

This map looks weird. Any year without Hawai’i is a sad one.

  2. Cranky, on Chrome the image I see before I click on the post to read it appears to show LAX-HNL/JFK/EWR, which is obviously at odds with the first line of the post. Not a big deal, just figured I’d let you know.

Thanks. I know we all look forward to your take on the WN holiday fiasco later this week.

Finally traveling internationally again for the first time in 2 1/2 years.

  4. 2022 was yet another year spent almost entirely in a zero-COVID economy including 2.5 months that I couldn’t go outside of my neighbourhood, so flight count still suffered, but not as bad as 2021’s paltry 4 flights. 2023 will be much much better as normality has returned.

    1. Looks like you were able to get the bids for the CUN run on a regular basis, so at least there’s that.

How many other people visited Cancun 40+ times last year? :-)

(I’m not a flight attendant, but I imagine there are far worse routes to work.)

      1. I’m super senior in my base, so I definitely get my choice of lines. I’m going for PHX this year haha.

  7. Miles: 25,577 (2,380 last year)

  13. I made my first trip to Hawaii (on United 777-300ERs; actually turned out being the same plane to and from) … hope you get back to the islands this year. New aircraft was a Delta 737-900. My other highlight would have to be cashing in Southwest Rapid Rewards miles to come to my first — and hopefully not last — Cranky Dorkfest. Still haven’t gotten to fly on a Max yet; hoping to cross that one off this year. Happy New Year!

  14. Miles: 15552 (0 in 2020 and 2021)
    Segments: 9 (0 in 2020 and 2021)
New aircraft: A220 (sat on for two hours but never left gate), 737-MAX8
    New airports: None
    Most common aircraft: Q400, 737-800, 787-9 (2 each)
Most common airline: WestJet (5 segments; 4 originally scheduled, which would tie with Alaska)
Cancellations or >20 hour delays: 2 (in 4 scheduled trips)
    Most common segment: YLW-SEA; YLW-YYC (2 each)
Most common O/D airport: YLW (2 departures, 2 arrivals)
Most common airport (connecting only): SEA and YYC (tie, 2 departures and 2 arrivals each)

Got back in the air in a light way last year, and I can’t say I missed it. The travel experience was pretty miserable this year compared to the past, and both Air Canada and WestJet have refused to pay compensation for cancellations and missed flights that they said at the time, quite clearly, were their fault but then magically weren’t their fault when it came time to take responsibility. Leaves a pretty sour taste.

    1. Wrinkle in mine that’s new for 2022 travel: One of my two 787 flights was short-haul domestic (YYC-YYZ), and one of my trans-Atlantics was a 737-MAX8 (YYZ-EDI). And I didn’t mind the narrowbody for the long haul at all; nice to have the option on a classic route that probably wouldn’t exist if it could only be flown with widebodies.

  15. Cranky, when you say most common airport, do you mean O/D airport or do connections count the same? I guess you probably don’t think about this since most of your trips are non-stop, but for those of us who begin and end every single trip flying outstation to hub, the hubs effectively get double-counted and thus are artificially inflated.

    1. Alex – I’d count connections. After all, most of those arrivals and departures of mine were effectively connections during the California Corridor Challenge!

  16. Miles: 60,093 (25,463 last year)
    Segments: 50 (24 last year)
    New Aircraft: A320neo, A220-100, A220-300

  17. Miles: 111,748 (70,844 in 2021)
    Segments: 79 (56 in 2021)
    New Aircraft: A220-100, ERJ-195, 737 MAX 9
New Airlines: GOL, Azul, LATAM, British Airways, Lufthansa, Air New Zealand, Qantas
New Airports: MEX, CGH, SDU, SCL, CJC, NCE, LHR, YYC, FRA, LUX, WLG, ZQN
Most Common Aircraft: B737-800 (14 segments)
Most Common Airline: United (65 segments)
Most Common Airport: ORD (48 departures/arrivals)
    Most Common Non-Directional Route: DCA-ORD (17 segments)

  18. Segments: 42 (2021: 59, 2020: 27)
    New Aircraft: None
    New Airports: GSP, CHS
    Most Common Aircraft: A321 (16)
    Most Common Non-Directional Route: BOI-ATL (12)
    Most Common Airline: Delta
    Most Common Airport: ATL (20)
    Cancellations: 2 (Southwest Not-Holiday Meltdowns)
    Delays > 2 Hours: 8 (6 Southwest Not-Holiday Meltdowns)

My flying normalized a little in 2022 after a busy 2021. In my line of work with everyone trying to come back online quickly after literally packing everything up in 2020, 2022 seems to be settling back into a rhythm. Southwest has really burned me the last two years, nearly all of my delays and cancellations came from them and they are only about 20% of my flying. This wasn’t even during any of their “meltdowns.” Their lack of reliability means I’m back to connections because now there’s no difference in time between a non-stop on WN and a connection on anyone else. Don’t take this to mean I’m a Delta apologist, they had plenty of issues, just not in as disruptive way that affected my work and getting home to my family.

  19. Miles: 16,021
    Segments: 18

Most Common Airline: Delta (12 segments)
    Most Common Airport: SJC
Most Common Non-Directional Route: SFO – LAS (4x)

It’s never a good year when the plane you fly on the most is the 737.

  20. Miles: 85,291 (30,079 last year)
    Segments: 72 (32 last year)
    New Aircraft: 737-500, 737 MAX 8, E145

Most Common Airline: Ryanair (24 segments)
Most Common Airport: Dublin (8 departures/9 arrivals)
    Most Common Non-Directional Route: Dublin-Milan/Linate (3 segments)

  21. To confirm, does “Non-Directional Route” mean, including layovers? For example, if I fly SMF-DEN-CLT and SMF-MDW-CLT, those both count as the same non-directional route from SMF-CLT?

  22. Miles: 84,511 (37,302 in 2021)

(I’m an airline employee and have had tons of fun exploring new airlines, new routes, and new planes via my nonrev benefits)

    1. I flew on Breeze from CHS to TPA about six weeks ago.

The flight was an hour and a half late, with no explanations. They had one person working the counter with a line of about 30 people checking in bags. I am pretty sure they went and hired their gate and counter people from the DMV.

The plane was a brand new 220 and it was nice. The service was limited to just a bottle of water.

If you can be really flexible and avoid having to check anything, they might be worth checking out. Otherwise… It’s basically a cheapo version of spirit.

    2. I flew them SDF-CHS in Nice Class, and CHS-MSY in Nicer on the E190 last year. I have reviews of both up on my site. You can click on my nickname and it’ll take you to the main page, and you can search for the Breeze reviews from there.

I’m trying to book a trip in Nicest Class to round out the trifecta, though planning a review trip on Breeze is harder than it looks when you have to position both to and from secondary airports that you live nowhere close to…

    3. I’ve flown Breeze a couple times this year SDF-SFO in nicest. The staff are friendly. The app is easy but with some rough edges to still work out. Their on-time performance is average and it still beats the cost in time and money of connecting in Atlanta, Salt Lake, Dallas, or Denver.

    4. I had a failed LAS-HPN on breeze that was delayed for over 5 h the day before citing crew availability. I have a B6 booked as backup and took that instead.
Another HPN-LAX on breeze worked in my flavor with a similar delay (original flight time was a bit too early for me). The service is fine nothing great or bad. Breeze proactively provided $50 in credit as compensation in both cases. They also refunded the first trip I did not take after I submitted the request using thier online form. If your trip is not critical and you can have an alternative fully refundable (ex. Award flight) backup, it does not hurt to try them.

  26. A big fat goose egg. Zero. Zilch. Nada. No flying at all in 2022. In 2021 it was Cancer and I learned I have heart trouble that prevents me from working. In 2022 it was more Cancer, COVID and even more Cancer.

  27. After a little bit towards the end of 2021, 2022 was quiet until August when my flying, umm, took off.

    Miles: 43,499 (5,193 last year)
    Segments: 16 (4 last year)
    New Aircraft: A321neo, A350-1000, 737 MAX 8
    New Airlines: None
    New Airports: Dallas/Love Field
Most Common Aircraft: 737-700 (4 flights)
Most Common Airline: Southwest (8 segments)
Most Common Airport: San Diego (4 departures/5 arrivals)
Most Common Non-Directional Route: San Diego – London/Heathrow (4 segments)

Number of 737 MAX 8 reservations that swapped to 737-800: 2
Number of visits to LGB: 1

  28. An infinite increase over 2021’s zero, but still really, really sad…sorry for the dull summary:

    Trips: 1
    Segments: 4
    MIles: 1,337
    Routes: TPA-BWI-SDF and back again
    Airlines: 1 (Southwest)

SDF is a new airport for me, so that’s something at least. And while I’m usually not that fond of airport renamings (they’re still “McCarran” and “Dorval” as far as I’m concerned), I like the “Muhammad Ali International Airport” name and logo very much.

2023? Nothing planned yet, although I’m going to try (yet again) to make Dorkfest.

  29. Trips: 2
    Segments: 6
    Miles: 7,015
    Airlines: 2 (United and Lynx)
    New airports: HNL, YVR, YYC.
New Planes: 777 (but it was an old one without gaspers!) and the 737-8 Max

I also flew my first non-US registered airplanes in Canada. I also had the fun of taking the bus across the border from Seattle then flying from YVR. When I booked my tickets I had an enhanced driver’s license but my passport was off being renewed, so I went with the ground option. Everything went smoothly, although the Lynx staff didn’t know that any document you can cross the border with in Canada is valid to fly with domestically. In YYR, the checkin agent had to ask a supervisor, but it was a non-issue. In YYC, there was only one person at the counter, and since there was a line behind me I dug out my Passport for her, even though per CATSA-ACSTA an EDL is fine.

HNL was fun. I wouldn’t stay in Waikiki again except as a way to be close to the airport for a flight. I spent most of a day up on the North Shore which is where I’d go. It was a short trip, that I booked less than a week before travel. Oh, and it included a visit to the In n’ Out that Cranky Dorkfest is at, since I had a three hour layover at LAX. All in all a good trip.

  30. Total miles: 35,367 (2021: 6,788) Total flights: 34 (2021: 9)

    New airports: AMS, CPH
    New aircraft: A350K, A320N
    No new airlines

    Most common airport: RNO (22)
Most common nondirectional route: RNO-LAS (15)
    Most common aircraft: B737 (15)
    Most common airline: SWA (17)

  31. Miles: 32,140 (22,779 last year)
    Segments: 36 (23 last year)

    New Aircraft: A350-1000, B787-9
    New Airline: Virgin Atlantic
    New Airports: Albuquerque
Most Common Aircraft: 737-700/800/MAX8/900ER (~24 segments)
Most Common Airline: Southwest (19 segments)
Most Common Airport: Austin (14 departures, 13 arrivals)
    Most Common Non-Directional Route: AUS-ABQ (7 segments)

Of the 737 flights, one -700 was United, one -800 was United, two -900ER were Alaska, one or two -800s were AA, one wass a WN MAX8, and the rest I believe were a blur of mostly -700s on Southwest. This was the first year I spent time in DFW since 2015, and the first year in IAH since 2007.

Last year I predicted I’d fly less in 2022 than in 2021. I was wrong. Guessing this year will have fewer segments, but only because AUS-ABQ is up to three nonstops per day. Fingers crossed I’ll finally make it onto an A220 this year, and maybe make it onto a new-to-me airline to boot. Already know I’ll be hitting at least one new airport (EYW).

Most common airline: WN (6 segments)
Most common airport: DFW (8 departures, 6 arrivals)
Most common non-directional route: none; all 32 segments were unique

        1. I figured it out, non directional means it doesn’t matter which direction is being flown on a particular route. Yikes that probably took way too long for me to figure out!
