Cranky Dorkfest is Saturday + An Avelo Tour Opportunity

Cranky Dorkfest

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting pretty excited about Cranky Dorkfest this Saturday. It’s been far too long since we’ve all been able to just eat burgers and watch airplanes. And as of now, it’s looking like a nice September day with temps in the low 70s and a thin marine layer that should burn off (we hope).

I have a whole bunch of raffle items to give away. Just make sure to grab a raffle ticket from me or someone else handing them out at the park across from In-N-Out on Saturday. Remember to wear your masks so that everyone feels comfortable being in the crowd.

There is one thing that just came up a couple days ago that requires a little advance planning.

Avelo has kindly offered to take up to 10 people on a tour of its Burbank facility this Saturday afternoon at 3:30pm. Since Dorkfest ends at 1pm, that is perfect timing for those who might be interested in driving out there. I’m told that since there aren’t any flights that afternoon, there will be plenty of time to climb around the airplanes with nobody else around. And as an added bonus, there will be both a 737-800 and a 737-700 — the type that will fly the New Haven routes — there for you to see.

Keep in mind this is at Burbank, so you will need to have wheels (or rideshare) if you want to participate. Driving from LAX takes about 45 minutes with moderate traffic, but plan on over an hour just to be safe. I won’t be able to join you, but this will be a great opportunity for 10 lucky people to check the airplanes out.

If you’re interested in going, I will pick randomly from the responses this Thursday. Fill out the form below (or click here if you can’t see it) and I’ll let each person who gets selected bring a guest if they want. Just note that in the form.

For those who don’t remember the details, here they are.

What: Cranky Dorkfest LAX
When: Saturday, September 18, 11am – 1pm
Where: The park across from In-N-Out Burger @ 9149 S Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90045
How: Show up, wear a mask, watch airplanes, eat burgers, talk shop
Why: Because airplanes + burgers = moment of pandemic happiness

See you Saturday!

  1. Regrettably, I am unable to make it this year, but thanks to you and your team for all of your excellent and enjoyable work! I wish you well!!!

  2. Does anyone know approximately how long I should budget for going from airside at LAX to the In-N-Out? Any recommended shortcuts? Thanks in advance!

    1. S – It depends on what terminal you’ll be in. If you’re beyond T1 or 2, you may want to take the bus to LAXit which is where all the rideshare is.
Then you can walk from there pretty easily.

  3. Looking forward to another Dorkfest! I signed up for the Avelo tour raffle but have no car; if I’m selected I’m willing to share a car rental or rideshare with other tour participants.

    1. Same, though I should be low on the priority list here as I have a 6:20p flight back home. So I’d need to be heading back to LAX at <= 4:30p.

    2. Same here. Maybe all the tour winners can huddle together albeit safely after Dorkfest and rideshare it to BUR.

  4. Damn, I really wanted to make it this year, but three eye surgeries and a health insurance change since January (you gotta love having to pay your out-of-pocket twice in the same year) have drained the budget, although I’ll admit I just checked for last-minute sales.

Next year I’m buying tickets as soon as the date is announced!

  5. My 8 year old son and I are looking forward to it. Coming in Friday afternoon. Anybody else going to be overnighting at the Hyatt Regency?

  6. Thought I would attend, but my wife is quite ill. Next year, I hope. Have a great time.

  7. Regret I cannot make it this year as uncle Sam still won’t let Canadians in. Miss you guys and NYC Spotters.

    1. @King Hui, When my wife and I visited Niagara Falls in mid-August, the border crossing had just opened to non-essential travel, i.e. tourism. Was that only for Americans entering Canada, not Canadians entering the US?

  8. I guess the third time might be the charm in trying to attend Dorkfest…

    1. Days off confirmed for Sunday & Monday – Check
    2. Load factors looking good both ways TPA-LAX – Check
    3. Wonderful Wife will pick up daughter from school so I can fly earlier on Friday – Check

Looking good to finally get to check out this event!
