Cranky on the Web: Recovery Thoughts, Frontier’s Middle Seat, Air Canada’s Refund Refusal, Change Fees

Air Canada, Cranky on the Web, Frontier

I sat down with Courtney Miller for a 35 minute discussion that ranged from Hawaii’s uniqueness to through on the recovery. Come on, you know you were just looking for a good way to kill 35 minutes this weekend. Here you go.

Q&A: Why some planes are crowded even with air travel downAssociated Press
I talked a bit about Frontier’s plan to charge people to have an empty middle seat next to them. As I said, I can understand why Frontier is doing this, but as subscribers to Cranky Daily know, there’s a potential dark side here. If there is public backlash, it could hurt Frontier…. And sure enough, there WAS public backlash. It’s been called off.

Silver lining in flight refund fight? A California law that may recover your moneyLos Angeles Times
Air Canada has been rather problematic with its stance on refunds, and the LA Times is trying to help at least one person. I frankly have no idea what Expedia was saying here, but regardless, a refund should be due.

Airlines had been raking in billions in fees. What will they do now?TPG
I find it very surprising that anyone think airlines will ditch cancel/change fees going forward, but sure enough, some do expect that. Once there’s a vaccine/herd immunity/cure, then I assume things go right back to how they were.

  1. Re: Refunds Policy….If the airlines hadn’t been so in-your-face with pax with nickel&dime charges and onerous rules and narrower and narrower seats, we, the travelling public might…I say, MIGHT, have been a bit more sympathetic to them.
Now, f#%k ’em. They reap what they’ve sown.

    1. And…remember those “one-time emergency fuel surcharges”…that never come off ticket prices? Staggered to see NBC TV news last night saying expect higher ticket prices when flying in the future…can’t be because of fuel costs that’s for sure!!

  3. Flew Southwest yesterday, it was a -700….there were only 43 bookings available for sale and 42 were booked, plenty of room to spread out, middle seats were empty except for people traveling together….felt safe and nice not to be packed in like normal, most people didn’t wear masks but that’s their problem, I’ll do what makes me feel safe. Having the middle seat left empty made me feel comfortable about flying, we’ll see what tomorrow’s flight is like.
