Good thinking, and I guess not every employee has to be cross trained. Even cross training a few would help.

Cross training is pretty essential for all small businesses. It took me some time but my shop workers (carpenters, painters, welders and electrical) are all pretty much cross trained so when things start to slow down they simply “lend an hand” and get the job over the hump. Everyone seemed pretty open to this as they learned other skills and in essence become more valuable. Vale does equal better pay to me and I made it clear that those who jumped at the opportunity to cross train would receive a raise. We are all winning now. Less backlog for the business and more pay in the pockets of the workers.
