Cranky on the Web: Global Entry Ain’t What It Used to Be, Southwest’s Numbers, Flyadeal Interview

Are Global Entry and TSA PreCheck Losing Their Value?TravelPulse
TSA Precheck and Global Entry have been well worth it for years, but is that changing? With new options for regular travelers, Global Entry in particular is losing its luster. I’m not sure I’d even bother getting it today if I didn’t already have it.

A new Southwest Airlines takes off — to mixed resultsTravel Weekly
Southwest reported Q2 results that weren’t great, but I argue that it’s way too early to judge that right now. Too much change has yet to hit the bottom line.

I was in Cranky Concierge management meetings all this week, so I wasn’t able to join Jon and Brian. They decided to go outside my happy place in North America to tackle Flyadeal. What, you’ve never heard of Flyadeal? You are not alone. It’s Saudia’s low-cost carrier arm based in Jeddah, and CEO Steven Greenway sat with the guys to talk about his rapidly-growing and apparently profitable airline.

Global Entry remains the best $120 I’ve spent – regularly saves me hours at immigration; plane to curbside in less than 15 mins in most cases, for me.

I recently went through Global Entry at JFK in the middle of day, not exactly a small airport. Took me an entire minute. So even if the regular CBP is making improvements, Global Entry is also making continuous improvements

Global Entry also allows you to use the Nexus lanes when entering the USA, but NOT Canada (you need Nexus for that). I was able to get through the border at Peach Arch (between I 5 in Washington and BC 99 in British Columbia) in minutes on a Sunday late morning when the line on 99 stretched back about 2 km.

Only flew Flyadeal once – in 2023 – but they seemed pretty competent. Fare was roughly what I would expect for the distance, broad mix of passengers, load factor looked good – and operationally seemed competent. I’d be willing to accept the company is either profitable or at least close to breakeven.

I strongly discourage any new people from signing up for precheck or global entry. They’re both so so so inefficient and won’t save you any time. If you’re reading this and have never signed up, please don’t. No really, please don’t so I can get through precheck even faster…oops sorry, I meant so you can save your money :)

Was waiting for someone who got the point of the article. The same way that elitist wrote in the NYT that airport lounges are too full and not worth it anymore.

Also an unexpected treat for Global Entry/NEXUS car users: We can use the trusted traveler lanes in Canada! <3 <3 <3

Apparently the US is also talking to the UK & Germany to roll it out there as well.

Global Entry also gets you access to Sentri lanes coming back from Mexico. This can literally save you hours in line over the regular or Ready lanes. It is well worth it for those of us on the southern border. Just make sure to register your car when you enroll or renew, as it will cost extra if you do it later.
