Cranky Dorkfest is One Month From Today… And It’s Happening

Cranky Dorkfest

Yes, yes, I’m still on vacation, but I scheduled this post long ago. Just a friendly reminder that I hope to see many of you there in one month! Now back to fruity drinks…

Today is August 18, and that means one month from today, on September 18, Cranky Dorkfest will be here. Now, I know some of you have been concerned that I might cancel the event with the rise of the Delta variant, but that is not happening. It is still ON.

Here is a friendly summary of the plan for those who haven’t participated before.

What: Cranky Dorkfest LAX
When: Saturday, September 18, 11am – 1pm
Where: The park across from In-N-Out Burger @ 9149 S Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90045
How: Show up, watch airplanes, eat burgers, talk shop
Why: Because airplanes + burgers = moment of pandemic happiness

Since the event is outside, the chances of COVID transmission appear to be fairly low, BUT everyone has differing levels of comfort being around other people. For that reason, I am requesting that everyone wear a mask when you are in the vicinity of others. You most definitely will not be allowed into In-N-Out without a mask, but to make sure everyone feels comfortable, please wear it outside as well when you are near others.

We will have a raffle again this year, and so far I have some pretty great prizes coming from Alaska, Avelo, Boeing, Southwest, Spirit, and more. I’m still thinking of doing it the old fashioned way where we hand out the raffle tickets, but if anyone has a better way to electronically collect names and pick winners, I’m all ears.

I look forward to seeing a whole bunch of you in one month. Now back to my vacation…

  1. I’m there, free first class from Miami and take in Chargers home opener…looking forward to LA visit.

  2. With my luck I’d win a prize from Spirit and/or Boeing. I already suffer from low back pain (from an airport injury) so neither of those would help. Guess I’m sitting it out in Boston for yet another Dorkfest.

    1. Cranky stated that he has no sympathy when people, by their own choices, fail to take the appropriate precautions to avoid getting ill. Don’t try to contort his words into something they aren’t. I’m sure for those individuals who are unable to take the vaccine, Cranky would have immense sympathy for them. But those that choose to ignore pretty much every doctor on earth, they’re on their own. Should you choose to jump off a bridge, you are exercising your own free will and judgment. Should you die, though, don’t expect much sympathy from me for making what is a very poor decision.

I suggest you move on instead of continuing to imply that Cranky does not harbor sympathy for his fellow humans. He has demonstrated immense sympathy for people over the years and I have no doubt will continue to do so.

      1. Chris – While I appreciate the defense, this is just a troll. Each comment was posted using a different name from the same IP address. So it’s just someone who likes to stir up trouble. I recommend everyone just ignore the way I do!

        1. SuperCow ignoring powers ACTIVATE!

(At one point I watched too many cartoons with my niece…this is from “Back to the Barnyard” in case anyone’s wondering.)

  3. DL 1165/1044 booked with SkyPesos, though I might switch that around a bit since flight prices have gone down since I booked and the flight moved a bit schedule-wise (earlier in, later out). Maybe detour through SLC to catch an A220. Or take Spirit on the way in. The possibilities are endless, but either way, I’ll be there, masked + vax’d.

  4. Woo hoo. I’ll be there coming in from Kauai. Need to get off this rock for a little while. Coming in via HA LIH-HNL-LAX HA104/HA10 B717 and A330 on the 17th. Looking forward to Dorkfest. Be safe, mask up, social distance and bring your hand sanitizer.

For the raffle, you could do an online number generator or name picker. Theres several online like commentpicker.com or random.org.

    Take care everyone.

    1. Bricen – Sounds great. I thought about the random number generator, but then the problem is getting people on the list in the first place. I don’t want to have to walk around and get people to enter their names. That’s why the paper tickets are just so easy.

      1. You could have a google form where people enter their names, and then use a random number generator to pick random names..

        1. Ro – I thought about that, but then I realized that opened up opportunities for fraud for people to just enter their names a ton. I don’t want to have to police it.

  5. For the raffle, will Patrick Quayle be donating the dryer that he used to give the illusion of gazing through an airplane window during his Cranky Network Award acceptance speech? ;-)

I kid, of course, but I still think that was an awesome way to do it (from a creativity side and from a visual side), as were many of the other acceptance speeches, and I can’t wait for the Cranky Network Awards next year.

  6. Do I sit on my hands, or do I say this?

My synagogue recently had two events, outdoors, with the same precautions you plan, which turned into spreader events among the vaccinated, just at Brett got sick. People eat, and then get sloppy about masks. People with vaccines get overconfident in them, forgetting distancing. Disinhibition.

Should we, at this point, really be relying on our vaccines, while our hospitals are again in jeopardy? Most of us won’t die or need hospitalization, but for those that do, we’re needlessly adding to hospital loads. I’m not talking Mississippi, where vaccination rates have been low, but Los Angeles County, where we’ve seen lots of people taking vaccines. There’s a reason employers are backing off from making people return to the office.

Yes, get the vaccine. No, don’t stop other precautions. Social events are turning into larger risks than people realize. I want us avgeeks to get through this pandemic too.

    1. I just wonder how many of those vaccinated needed to be hospitalized? Sadly getting sick with colds, flus, viruses, etc. happens all the time. As much as I wish the virus disappears I don’t see it happening in my lifetime. I just hope for solid vaccines and better treatments as time goes on.

And yeah I got vaccinated back in March. I go out and eat and stuff but do avoid crowded places, etc.

  7. I return to LAX four days prior from another month of taking care of my elderly parents in Boston. If I’m physically recovered, I’ll be there with bells on and mask on. (Pardon my dangling participles.) :-)
