Cranky Talk – Summer Travel Guessing Game

This week, I decided to pelt Dave with numbers. It’s his favorite thing. Maybe that’s a slight exaggeration.

What I really did was go into Cirium schedule data and pull every airport in the US to see which ones are seeing the biggest increase in seats and which see the biggest decrease this year vs 2019. The end result answers the question… “where do airlines think you want to fly this year?”

Some of this might be surprising, but most of it shouldn’t be too much of a shock for regular Cranky readers.

  1. I have family in the SRQ area, and yes, Longboat Key and St. Armand’s are a very nice and upscale areas. However, one must be cognizant of traffic out that way, as the traffic across the causeways to those areas can be REALLY, REALLY bad (especially for the area) during peak season and peak hours.

I (and my family) rarely fly in/out of SRQ, however, as TPA/PIE are a (relatively) easy ~1 hour drive up the freeway (at the cost of a few tolls, and occasionally some strong gusts over the causeways that cross Tampa Bay), flights to SRQ have historically been more expensive, and for its size TPA is a very easy/quick airport to get in and out of. Also, you didn’t mention it on the podcast, presumably for reasons of time, but in addition to PIE (St. Pete / Clearwater), Allegiant has a very large base (for them, at least) in Punta Gorda, FL, about 2/3 the way from Sarasota to Fort Myer, and right on I-75.

It will be interesting to see how much of the service added to SRQ in recent months is still around 2 or 3 years from now, but I guess that’s true for many of the destinations you mentioned on this podcast.
