Mark Your Calendars for Cranky Dorkfest on September 18

I’m very, very excited to announce that I’m going to try to make Cranky Dorkfest happen this year. Please mark your calendars for September 18 at LAX, and let’s all hope the pandemic allows it to happen. Once again, this will be the same weekend as NYCAviation’s SpotLAX event.

For those who aren’t familiar, Cranky Dorkfest is a very simple affair that happens every September (er, uh, not last year). Come to the In-N-Out just off the northernmost runway at LAX, eat a burger, watch airplanes, and talk shop with fellow dorks. In previous years, I’d scheduled additional events as the day became more popular, but this year it’ll be back to basics since it’s all so uncertain.

What: Cranky Dorkfest LAX
When: Saturday, September 18, 11am – 1pm
Where: In-N-Out Burger @ 9149 S Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90045
Why: Because we love watching airplanes and talking shop
How: Well, you can either drive, bike, walk or fly depending upon where you live

Cranky Dorkfest is one of my favorite days of the year, and it was painful to not be able to do a regular event last September due to the pandemic. I’m hopeful that it’ll work out this year, but hey, if it doesn’t at least you’ll have no change fee on your plane tickets….

Not sure what you’re missing? It’s this:

So make your plans now, and just be sure you have no change fees if you’re flying!

There are these things with wings and engines. I hear they’re pretty useful…

Well, I’d recommend an airplane, but I’d say that Amtrak would be happy to bring you, as would Greyhound. Or you could drive yourself, bike, or possibly walk. Also, might be able to take a Panama Canal cruise? ;)

Does Cranky Flier have a business travel specific group? Would be great to connect with other global travel buyers!

        1. CF Avatar

Jordan – We don’t have anything that’s business travel specific, I’m afraid.

        @ Douglas Swalen and @CF

I read the blog for interest. I stay for the snarky comments!! :-)

I cracked up when I read both your comments to Jordan’s question!

        Well Done!!

I already booked my flight. But I had to since my cert was expiring and this was before the airline announced a 1 year extension.

Dfw88 – The following week? That’s the perfect time to leave! ;)

For those considering a day trip, have previous participants walked from LAX to In-N-Out? In-N-Out appears to be about a mile from LAX T1, or 1.5 miles from Tom Bradly Int’l.

PF – Yep, it can definitely be walked. You’ll want to walk out to Sepulveda, cross the street, and then walk north on the sidewalk until you get up toward In-N-Out. It’s pretty straightforward.

Hi – there are two In n Out locations. The Cranky Dorkfest one is really close to the LAX north runways and lots of street parking.

I took the shuttle to The Parking Spot last time I came: https://www.theparkingspot.com/locations/los-angeles/lax

You’ll have to join the Parking Club, but thats free.
