Long time readers of the blog know that several years ago, I wrote Where the Hell Am I Going?, a book about my literal and figurative journey after getting laid off just before my wedding. The month-long trip around the US was great for me to clear my head, and I decided to publish what I wrote on the road in 2010. (It’s still for sale if you’re interested in a quick and fun read: Amazon paperback – $14.99/Kindle – $9.99)
I loved writing that book and figured I would write another one of these days. But I didn’t predict that my next book would be something so completely different. When Globe Pequot Press asked me if I would be interested in writing a book in their “How to” series for home-based businesses, I figured it would be fun. And it was.
My book, How to Start a Home-based Blogging Business, is now for sale all over the place from Amazon to Barnes & Noble and everything in between.
Basically what I did here was write down everything I went through and considered along the way as I built Cranky Flier and Cranky Concierge into what it is today. It should be pretty easy to read and it goes step by step through various bits and pieces that will help you build your own blogging business.
Is this a definitive guide on how to start a home-based blogging business? No. I don’t think that’s possible. There will always be a lot of different opinions on how to do things. I have, however, built a successful business this way, and I’d like to think others can as well.
To celebrate, I’m going to give away a couple copies of the book. If you’re interested, just leave a comment below and make sure to include your email address in the field as requested when you leave the comment. (It won’t be displayed to the public and you must include it to be entered.) You can say anything you want in the comment, just make sure you leave it by Thursday, March 21 at 1159pm. I will then use a random number generator to pick the two winners on Friday.
And of course, if you don’t win, the book is for sale at your local bookstore.

This looks like a useful book.
I’d be really interested to read your book. When it comes to blogging, I don’t know what I’m doing more often than I do, so, I ‘d love some insight. thanks.
I would definitely be interested in reading this book.
I loved reading “Where the Hell Am I Going”. It was quick and fun, just like you said. I will definitely consider reading this one as I am currently developing a blog of my own.
I’m also trying to win :)
I would be very interested in a copy.
Could mine be autographed?
A proper use of the word “literal.” Hooray! Sorry – just a peeve of mine these days since it seems to have become fashionable to use it as synonym for “very” or “actually” among other atrocities. I’ll shut up now.
Pick me!
Congrats on the book!
Looking forward to a great read!
Congrats on the new book! Look forward to reading.
Interested in reading this book.
Add me to the game..
Sounds like an interesting read… good luck.
Hope it goes bestseller!
I would love to read it and then when i have finished creating my blogging empire I will pass the book onto @airlinereporter so then he can do the same ;)
Seems cool. Good work, Cranky!
I always enjoy reading your posts!
This is a fantastic guide that really takes you step by step through the process of starting your own blogging business. Brett brings valuable insight and useful information right to your fingertips. It was a pleasure to work on this book as his editor and suggest if you are not lucky enough to win a copy to definitely go out and buy one!
Congratulations on the new book! Enjoy the blog; hopefully will enjoy reading a winning copy of the new book too.
I want to write a book. How do I start? I didn’t get laid off a week B4 my marriage.
;-) Best Wishes. working on my first Blog on a Trip – my December 2012 787 DreamLiner Nation-Wide Tour
Looking forward to reading this book!
Pick me random number generator!
Congrats Brett! However, I’m a little scared as I don’t think I knew I had a CF alter ego?!?!?!?!?!??!
I hope this book has the same kind of dorkiness and crazy visuals that you have on the blog. Fun stuff :)
I would like to read your ideas without paying for it :)
Congrats and looking forward to reading it!
Brett: As you know I am a big fan and have thoroughly enjoyed watching your Phoenix-like rebirth. Congratulations on your success, and remember us little guys on your way up. The best is yet to come my friend.
Long time reader of Brett’s and CF.
Love the pun.
I’d love to get a copy of this book! :)
Comment.
Love your blog and love free books…..!
Loved the last one! Would pass this one on to my sister after reading as she is trying to follow in your footsteps….
Sounds interesting
I’d love a copy!
I always enjoy reading!
I’d be happy to take one of the winner’s copies off your hands.
Congrats! Looks like a great read. Many thanks.
The first book was a great read. I look forward to this one, and any more to come…

Congratulations on your new book. I wish you well.
Congratulations on publishing your second book!
Congratulations! I didn’t know local bookstores still existed!
I enjoy your blog and wouldn’t mind reading your book for free!
Congrats, Brett on #2 Book! Looking forward to reading it!
Well, as a big Cranky Fan, I couldn’t believe that I didn’t know that you previously wrote a book! I musta missed that post! So I just ordered both of them off of amazon (gotta love having a Prime Membership!) If I win, I will donate the copy to a worthy cause!
Brett! Every since I found you blog, I love it and always can’t wait for the next posting. I haven’t read your first book but I’m downloading it now and looking forward to the second one. Thanks for all you do for us airline geeks!
-Dave
Brett,
I love the airline industry and thank you for all your useful information. I can honestly say that I have saved money on tickets because of the nuggets of info that you’ve provided. I am also an “airplane and airline nerd” and love the industry.
Thanks for the words, keep up the great work.
Frank
I would like to read this book
congrats on the book!
I look forward to reading it!
Brett,
looks like you solved the secret to getting comments! FREE!
Brett: Look forward to reading your second book.
Brett,
I would like to write a book titled “Where the hell have I just been” about all the places we go, and then ask ourselves what are we doing here, and how fast can we get out!
Ps Have not read any of your books as yet, as I’m not a big reader and my attention span is not good, as there is so much more fun things going on around us all everyday
if your book is half as good as your Cranky Flier blog – it will be very entertaining / educational and a good read! Many thanks!
AS I am planning on (for some time) to do a biz blog, I think your book would be great. My idea: To sell random number generators in Latin and Sanscrit so that other businesses can use them to give away stuff. Brilliant, huh?
Published not once, but twice! It must be a great feeling.
Not wanting to leave obtaining a copy of your book to chance, I purchased one of two remaining copies from Amazon (says more are on the way) – so they are indeed flying off the shelves. Anxious to read it as I do enjoy your blog!
Brett – I checked out your first book on Amazon and it is hilarious to see what the Amazon algorithm offers as “other recommendations”. The word “hell” in a title does not sit well with Amazon apparently…
I did a screen grab but I can’t post a picture here. But here are some is some of it “copy/paste” style:

Geez, now Amazon is trying to convert a Jew. Yikes. Where is the Anti-Defamation League when you need em?
I’ve always enjoyed writing and would love to author a book sometime. Right now my efforts are confined to journaling and writing purely for my own pleasure. Best of luck with your new book!
I’m always up for a good read! I’d love to read your book!
Looking forward to the new book!
Look forward to reading your book.
So during my next missed connection, while waiting for my Cranky Concierge to do his magic, maybe I can read your book :-)
Your new book is just what I need for a project -and for doing something productive and fun during all those hours I spend at airports and airborne.
Congrats on being published twice! My wife is interested in getting her blog off the ground, and aspires to be a “real writer,” too, so your book would be perfect for her (after I read it!).
Just curious!
I look forward to your new book to read something productive and fun during all the hours I spend at airports and airborne.
Congratulations! I hope it sells quickly and often. Another 12 or so books and you’ll match Darryl Jenkins!
Win by luck not by content of the comment? I’m surprised it’s only 2 pages of comments so far
Love this thanks.
Congratulations on your new book! I hope it’s very successful.
Congrats! Love everything you write.
Sounds like an interesting read.
I read you blog all the time so your book is probably very good!
Congratulations on your second book.
I’m looking forward to your new book.
finally, a how-to which is easy to read and actually gives you details and not a lot of wasted information, thanks.
Enjoyed the first book tremendously. Hope this one is as entertaining.
If you wrote it then I’ll read it.
i like the title what were we thinking when we visdited_______________
Congratulations!! Enjoyed the first book. Looking forward to the next.
Congrats from another fellow CN specialist who really needs to learn how to blog.or maybe I should take lessons from Stacy
You’ve generated a great following of avid aviation fans and have a plethora (how do you like that word?) of great travel knowledge and helpful tips! I would love to win a copy of your new book!
I’m really disappointed that your new book isn’t named, “How I got to where the hell I was going.”
I would prefer the title to be “Why the H___ did I return home?”
If it is even half as good as the blog I am sure it will be a worthy read!
Love to read your new book! Thanks for the contest!
I love the blog. Thanks! I would love to read the first book…… and also the new one. Great contest!
Congrats! That’s awesome
That’s awesome Brett. I can’t wait to go buy the book.

Sounds like a great read
Interesting… I wonder if this will be a record number of comments for a single day. :)
Congrats on the new book.
Brett, can we purchase an e-book version?
Sign me up please.
I know reading this cranky how to book will be easier than reading the something for dummy book because it relates to aviation.
I love reading and would like to try your book. Thanks!
Looking forward to reading your new book.
Looking forward to the read!
Congratulation Brett!!!
I am looking forward…and waiting your new book..

Brett, here’s to a successful continuation of the Cranky Flier brand. Much success to the sale of your book. Looking forward to the read and if it is anything close to the first book, it will be a success.

So very cool, Brett! I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog…especially when you have written about the US-AA merger. I have recommended your blog to colleagues and clients. I look forward to reading your books! Blessings!
Congrats! I cannot imagine where you found the time to write another book. What with all your posting, all the traveling for meetings, research+, and running the biz too, how is it possible to do it all and maybe sleep as well? Hope to learn the answer in the new book!
Thank you everyone for the comments. There were 126 that came in, so using random.org, the first winner is number 12 (Phil) and the second was number 9 (Victor). I will send you both emails to get your information so I can send you each a copy of the new book.
Damn, I missed this one… I got a copy of the last one a few years ago; I’ll need to complete my Crankyllection and purchase this one.
