Cranky on the Web: The Brawl By the Bay is Settled, Talking A220-500

Oakland, San Francisco airports settle fight over East Bay hub’s name – San Jose Mercury News

The fight over Oakland airport’s name has now been settled. It can now continue to call itself Oakland San Francisco Bay International Airport. It just can’t put San Francisco before Oakland, but there are some other caveats too. Will this solve the airport’s problems? No.

Who wants to talk about the A220-500? We took a break from pure chaos this week as Jon led us through a look at the A220-500 stretch… which may or may not happen. But if it does, it’s not clear how attractive everyone will find the airplane. Listen in for more.

My understanding from another article is they also cannot use the word “International“ in their name, even though they are an international airport, as part of the agreement.

I am looking forward to the A220-500 when/if it is done. I’ve flown on the A220-100 and -300 and I really like them as long as you don’t need to reboot them. It beats the 737 and even the A320 for passenger experience.

Also, Oakland has a more population living closer to it than SFO. You think they should be able to use that to get more flights. The downside is Hegenberger which sucks to drive. SFO is connected to 101 and SJC has only one traffic light from 87.

Seems Bay residents were the losers for having to pay attorney and court fees for SFO and OAK litigation. I would like to know how many actual travelers were confused with OAK’s name. Would have been helpful if OAK attorneys did a sample survey to see if SFO had a legit claim vs theoretical confusion.

Each airframe has a sweet spot in its development. For the B767, the 300 series far outsold the 200 & 400 based on rolls and efficiency. Same with the M80 which far outsold the MD 90.
The A220 500 will be hindered by an impediment of range. Airlines like AirBaltic or Breeze may be interested, but airlines with Boeing MAX and Airbus NEO jets in their fleets will pass.

For RJs, a220 and E2, any and all variants, really should replace all CRJ and 717 (can’t believe DL, Hawaiian still has them). Long-overdue.
