2021 Flying Summary

Miscellaneous

There’s another year in the books. My mileage wasn’t much higher than the year before, but my segment count? Well, that was 4x last year. I went back to the more normal pattern with more short-haul, but this is still far from normal.

Miles: 11,674 (10,041 last year)
Segments: 16 (4 last year)
New Aircraft: None
New Airlines: Avelo
New Airports: Arcata/Eureka, Ogden
Most Common Aircraft: 737-800 (6 flights)
Most Common Airline: Southwest (6 segments)
Most Common Airport: Long Beach (3 departures/4 arrivals)
Most Common Non-Directional Route: Long Beach – Phoenix (4 segments)

While I’m here, I thought I’d look back to when I started keeping track of my flights in summer of 1994. Since that time, I’ve flown nearly 940,000 miles. My top airline was, unsurprisingly, America West with 209 flights. Southwest follows with 141, then American at 74 and United at 66. That’s pretty crazy considering I actually worked for United but not Southwest or American.

My most common aircraft type is the A320 with 136 flights followed by the 737-300 on 131 flights, both types operated by America West. And my most common route? It’s no contest with Phoenix – LA at 68 flights followed by Phoenix – Long Beach at 37.

How’d you do?

Like many people, my 2020 & 2021 stats were outright awful. Finally made it to LAX, have visited LA many times but have always used other airports. Only three more airports to mark of visiting the top 20 busiest airports worldwide.

  18. Didn’t think 2021 would be worse than 2020 but here we are…
    Miles: 449
    Segments: one (2020: 6, 2019: about 20)
ITM-HNA, HNA is a new airport
    Airlines: JAL (1), aircraft: E170 (1)

I’m hesitant to ever try to predict the future anymore but I’m pretty sure 2022 will have more flying than this…

  19. I’m tired just looking, but my best thing of 2021 flying is I flew to Alaska, meaning I have now flown into at least one airport in all 50 states. And you can’t match that right now, until someone starts service to Delaware again.

    Miles: 202.455
    Segments: 212

Most common airport other than home DFW: PHL

New Airports: SJD, ANC, FAI, Healy AK, Hays KS

Now have 356 airports flown into.

    1. Actually we can match that, since Frontier restarted service to ILG (Wilmington, DE) in 2020. So the game is on. :)

    Segments: 23 (10 last year)
    New aircraft: A321neo, Grand Caravan
New airlines: Mokulele, Hawaiian, Allegiant, Breeze
New airports: OAK, SJC, LAX, KOA, ITO, HNL, LIH, XNA, LAS
    Most common aircraft: 737 (10 flights); IIRC 737-800 x5, 737-700 x4, 737-MAX8 x1 but…WN
Most common airline: Southwest (8 segments)
Most common airport: Austin (8 departures, 7 arrivals)
    Most common non-directional route: Austin-Denver (3 segments)

Last year, I said I wouldn’t be surprised if I flew less in 2021 than in 2020. Turned out not to be the case, and I even got in a bit of long-haul flying, albeit only domestically.

With that said, next year will probably have fewer segments, the way things are going. Miles might be comparable, depending on whether my long-haul flight booked for mid-February (DL/VS there, BA back, first time on 350 and 787 family aircraft) proceeds as planned. Or maybe Omicron will be the last significant variant and I wind up jetting all over the place thanks to all of the destinations added from AUS. Time will tell.

  21. Miles: 9608

    Segments: 4

    New Aircraft: Boeing 787-10

    New Airport: none

    New Airline: none

    Most common aircraft: 787-10

    Most common airline: UA

Most common airport: MCO-EWR-FRA 2 segments each

  22. Well for the first time in years I didn’t fly on a plane even once. So 0 miles (or zero kilometers for non-Americans like myself).

  23. Miles: 70,844 (52,459 last year)
    Segments: 56 (44 last year)
    New Aircraft: A220-300, A321neo,
    New Airlines: Lufthansa, Swiss
New Airports: RSW, MXP, ZRH, ATH, JTR, MUC, BRU, VLC
Most Common Aircraft: CRJ-550 (10 flights)
Most Common Airline: United (51 segments)
Most Common Airport: IAD (28 segments)
Most Common Non-Directional Route: Washington DC (IAD/DCA) – Chicago (ORD) (10 segments each, 20 total)

Slow start and finish to 2021. At least I was active during the summer. Hoping to break that 100k mile threshold in 2022!

  24. Miles: 6,191 (1,358 last year)
    Segments: 8 (2 last year)
    New Aircraft: None
    New Airlines: Southwest
New Airports: Denver, St. Louis, Las Vegas
Most Common Aircraft: 737-800 (5 flights)
Most Common Airline: United (by distinct trips-2)/Southwest (by segments-4)
Most Common Airport: Seattle-Tacoma/San Francisco (tie-2 departures, 2 arrivals)
Most Common Non-Directional Route: San Francisco-Seattle (come on, the username gives it away-2 segments)

  25. The worst year ever!! Had many hopes and dreams that died along the way, still not looking too good for 2022.

    Miles: 1,960 (26,620 last year) (120,353 in 2019)
    Segments: 4 (27 last year) (111 in 2019)
    New Aircraft: Diamond DA40
New Airlines: Xiangtai Airlines (actually it is a flight school despite the name)
    New Airports: Zhuhai Lianzhou (ZGLZ)
Most Common Aircraft: A320 (one neo and one ceo)
Most Common Airline: tie – one each on HK Express, Hong Kong Airlines, Spring Airlines, and Xiangtai Airlines
Most Common Airport: Hong Kong (2 takeoffs/1 landing)
Most Common Non-Directional Route: No route flown more than once

At least I will get to take a flight next week! Cathay Pacific to Shanghai, then at least I may get to take some domestic flights (after the quarantine anyway…)

  26. Miles: 160,221 (95,132 last year)
    Segments: 181 (116 last year)
    New Aircraft: none
    New Airlines: none
New Airports: Barrow, Bozeman, Hilton Head, Montrose Morgantown, Palm Springs, Pensacola, Steamboat Springs, Tucson
Most Common Aircraft: 737-700 (50 flights)
Most Common Airline: American (93 segments)
Most Common Airport: Washington, DC (DCA) (60 segments)
Most Common Non-Directional Route: Baltimore – Houston Hobby (18 segments)

Unexpectedly I flew the most segments in a single year ever (during a pandemic!), even though I’ve averaged over 120 per year for the last 12 years. But this number and my second highest mileage year is more remarkable because 100% of the flights were domestic United States only.

  27. Miles: 2,300
    Segments: 4
    New aircraft: 1 (Embraer 190)
    New airlines: Breeze
New airports: SDF (Louisville, KY), CHS (Charleston, SC)
Most common aircraft: E190 (2 segments)
Most common airline: tie between AA (2 segments) and Breeze (2 segments)
Most common airport: tie between DFW, SDF, CHS, and MSY (1 departure and 1 arrival each)
Most common non-directional route: none; all four segments were unique

  28. Zero flights for me, for the second year in a row and also, I believe, the second year in my life (certainly the second year in my adult life). Have one family trip booked for February; will take it if the Omicron curve turns around a bit and our 5-11 year old gets her second COVID shot in time to be allowed back in school after returning to Canada from the US. (She’ll reach the 8 week minimum spacing between first and second doses just in time, so depends if we can get an appointment within days of eligibility.) Very limited work travel may resume in the summer, but not before then.

  29. Miles: 40562 (21502 last year, 78537 in 2019)
    Segments: 43
    New aircraft: 1 (A350-1000)
    New airlines: 2 (AV, VS)
New airports: 4 (BMA, BOG, CTG, GVA)
Most common aircraft: A320-200 (8 segments)
Most common airline: LH (8 segments)
Most common airport: FRA (18 segments)
    Most common non-directional route: CDG-FRA (3 segments)

  30. Miles: 635
    Segments: 2
    Aircraft: 737-800
    Airline: Southwest
    Routing: STL-MKE-STL
    Reason: Birthday getaway
Highlight: Best brats ever at Milwaukee Public Market
Lowlight: Couldn’t find one book that interested me at the used book store at MKE airport. I’ve made day trips in the past just to shop there.
Cancelled trip: STL-SLC-PDX-LAX-MSP-STL. Reason: Flight changes that had me routed through virtually every DL hub with tight connections.
Cancelled trip: STL-OWB-STL on Cape Air. Reason: Mom’s surgery.
Almost booked: STL-MIA-GCM-MIA-STL. Reason not to book: COVID-19 hassles.

    1. Hi Chuck,
Your comment about the MKE book store brought back some wonderful memories. That place was a real highlight for regular business trips I made to MKE over 5 years ago. I’m glad the place is still there. Always proved to be an expensive visit whenever I went in – it is an oasis.

  31. Another big zero for me, second year in a row. Tried my best to at least get to Dorkfest but four eye surgeries in one year kind of broke the budget…which was still recovering from 2000.

For 2022? Would like to get at least a couple of flights in, will buy Dorkfest tickets as soon as Brett confirms the date. Other than that, maybe try to pick up at least one weekend flight somewhere, perhaps on a new airline, I still haven’t flown on Frontier, Allegiant, Breeze, or Avelo. (I doubt aha! will survive long enough for me to get out West.)

    1. Hope your eye surgeries went well. I fractured my left knee (hairline, no biggie) but sidelined me for my annual December trip so I get it. Hope you have a safe and Happy New Year with some flights under your belt to report next Dec 31.

  32. Miles: 8067
    Segments: 10
    New Aircraft: None
    New Airlines: Republic
    New Airports: ORF
    Most Common Aircraft: A320
Most Common Airline: Delta (8/10, with other 2 on Delta Connection carriers)
    Most Common Airport: MSN
    Most Common Non-Directional Route: MSN-MSP

Like many here, not a lot of flying, but more than 2020. On the plus side, I went home for the first time in almost 3 years.

A little off-menu, but my kids also got to go on their first “real” (6 states) road trip as well.

  33. Miles: 19,967
    Segments: 26
    New Aircraft: None
    New Airlines: None
    New Airports: Tampa, Palm Springs
    Most Common Aircraft: 737-700
Most Common Airline: Southwest (24 segments)
Most Common Airport: Sacramento (8 departures/8 arrivals)
Most Common Non-Directional Route: Sacramento-Colorado Springs

  34. Back in the air after a silent 2020:
    Miles: 2,380 (0 last year)
    Segments: 4 (0 last year)
    New Aircraft: none
    New Airlines: none
    New Airports: none
    Most Common Aircraft: 737-M8 x4
    Most Common Airline: Flair x4
Most Common Airport: YHZ and YOW
    Most Common Non-Directional Route: YHZ-YOW x2

    Ain’t much, but its something!!!

  35. Happy New Year, Cranky!

    Miles: 25,772 (16,748 last year)
    Segments: 16 (8 last year)

    Cheers to 2022!

Most Common Airline: American (11 segments)
Most Common Airport: SJC (8 departures/7 arrivals)
    Most Common Non-Directional Route: MIA-SFO (3 segments)

After almost no travel in 2020, I may have hit a new record for segments in a year in 2021 but since many were short flights along the west coast I’m well below my record mileage in a year in 2019.

  38. Miles: 62,007

    Most Common Non-Directional Route: OAK-LAX (2 segments)

Have a much bigger year planned for 2022 but I would have said that same thing about 2021 last year this time. Hoping for the best.

I started recording from my first flight on August 31st 1975 (yes – I really was a geek at 9 years old) Luton to Rimini on a Monarch Airlines B720.
Now after 940 flights I’ve travelled 1.48 million miles on 97 airlines, 72 aircraft types, 159 airports, 471 segments in 64 countries. Fastest and highest segments are the (so glad I burnt all my savings to do it) wonderful BA001 and 002 Concorde flights LHR-JFK-LHR in 2003. The most geeky is probably an Aeroflot IL62M London Gatwick to Leningrad in 1983 or getting one of the last Northwest DC10 flights across the Atlantic in 2003.
Most common airlines to date:- American (34%), British Airways (10%), KLM (9%) and Iberia (5%) – reflecting my great fortune to have lived in UK, US and Ecuador over these years.
