2018 Flying Summary

Miscellaneous

I said I was going to leave North America in 2018, but that didn’t happen.  For a variety of reasons (many work-related), I had to scrap trips that I had planned.  In the end, I was left with another really weak year of travel.  Let’s start with the anemic visual, thanks to the Great Circle Mapper.

map
Map via Great Circle Mapper

Miles: 19,406 (37,306 last year)
Segments: 17 (43 last year)

Yeah, not much to write home about last year, though at least I did get my first neo and logged a new airport.

Happy new year to all!

New things this past year: I was able to fly premium economy on a BA 787-9 and A380. The upper deck of the A380 was great with the extra space near the window. A380 was LAX – Heathrow and the plane is SO quiet. It doesn’t feel like it is moving so quickly when we took off. Marvel of modern engineering.

  5. Come to Canada this year!

Sadly, your map is much more exciting than mine.

Congratulations to Grosetto! I missed that opportunity unfortunately. But where the hell is Fromentin?

      1. Should have been Frometine instead of Fromentin. Small heliport a little to the south of Nantes in France – Oya Vendee Helicoptere operate a helicopter service to the Ile d’Yeu

  22. Happy New Year Cranky!

Managed to hold on to 1K this year (Just barely) due to a change in my territory (shrunk). 2019 will be a record year for me as my territory has just changed (expanded) again. With the new 1K requirements I should still hit it.

I use JetLovers to track all of my travel, if anyone is looking for such an app/website – this is my favorite. I use Swarm (AKA 4Square and just check in at each airport and it loads your flight and tracks everything for you. You can get as detailed as you like and later go in and add Flight #, Airline, Class, Seat, ETC.). They don’t have a formal app, but I saved it from Safari on my home screen so it functions just like a web-based app. It’s the best one I know.

    Here’s a link to my profile: https://www.jetlovers.com/profile/4798/#_=_

Here are my stats for 2018. I added a few more just for S&G’s.

    New Aircraft: 777-3ER, 787-9, 737 Max 9

    Happy New Year!

  26. This year I did the most flying ever…nothing like what you guys do but for me it was a lot. Beat out 2009 and 2011 by 1,000 miles.

    Miles: 34,375
    Segments: 16
    New Aircraft: 737 MAX
New Airlines: Air Canada, Cebu Pacific
New Airports, MNL (Yes, it’s as bad as they say it is. Worst major airport in Asia hands down), DGT, YUL, IAH
Most Common Airline: United (8 segments)
Most Common Airport: SFO (8 departures/8 arrivals)
    Most Common Non-Directional Route: SFO-LAX (4 segments)

      1. It’s an LCC, which is bad. And it’s an Asian LCC which is worse than being just an LCC. I flew them because that part of the trip had been pre-arranged…otherwise I would have preferred to fly Philippine Airlines.

I arrived at MNL, having overnighted after landing from Taipei the previous day, at least three hours early. The line to check in took an hour to get through. They announced a gate change five minutes before boarding and mine wasn’t the only gate change…I must have heard four others announced before it happened to me. The seats were slimline. There was advertising on the overhead compartments. Everything was for sale…even the water.

I had to repack my carry on to make it smaller out of a fear that they’d force me to check it (normally I take my rollerboard on the plane with me but that’s impossible to do with Cebu unless you pay for it). You have to make sure you have your baggage allowance paid for. The resort did that for me but you’d have to do it.

If this is what Asian LCC flying is like, consider me not a fan. I suspect Air Asia is probably better but I’ve never flown them (and don’t intend to if I can help it)

The only thing I won’t fault Cebu for is the fog in the cabin prior to take off. I’d never seen that phenomenon before flying in the South Pacific but I have read about it happening occasionally in the the more humidity challenged parts of the U.S. It was weird. It looked like we were being gassed.
