2023 Flying Summary

Miscellaneous

I’m done for the year, so might as well get this party started. Another year, another weird-looking map. The multiple short haul trips are somewhat obscured by the Atlanta and Kahului runs.

  5. I’m a bit superstitious about recording any flight details before they are flown for fear it will cause those plans to go to pot. So I will cautiously list what I have done this year along with the plan for my last two flights of 2023.

We’ll see if the work travel picks back up next year but I already have a few fun trips on the books for the first couple months of the year

  12. Been a crazy travel year.

    161,675 miles
    192 segments
    82 different airports

    New aircraft type: A380

New airlines: WizzAir, Divi Divi Air, Breeze

New airports: BON, CUR, LGW, NAP, VRB, IAG, EGE, ASE

Total airports in my lifetime: 407

  13. One non-rev trip to SAN. My wife non revved twice before, and stuff happened trying to get home, so we had to break the spell. Actually have a work related trip in Jan, and then we plot a good vacation far away for 2024.

  14. Miles: 5,679
    Segments: 14
    New Aircraft: None
    New Airlines: None
    New Airports: GCM
    Most Common Aircraft: CR7
Most Common Airline: American (13 segments)
Most Common Airport: CRW, CLT (5 each)

Another poor year for me. 2024 will bring nearly weekly CRW-CLT trips for work as I transferred. Hopefully get more leisure travel in. Did keep my streak of 15 years straight leaving the country and added Grand Cayman as a new visit.

  15. Light year for me based on segments due to some home renovations that kept me home, but still a great year of flying:

    Miles: 119,462 (123,958 last year)

Most Common Non-Directional Route: ORD – ATL (6 segments)
    Shortest Non-Directional Route: FLL-KIN (600 miles)

    1. Forgot:

Shortest Route: SFO – FAT (158 miles), which might also qualify for Shortest Non-Directional Route (which I took as being primarily non-east-west)

        1. Thank you for the explanation. I didn’t bother to go bi-directional on my measurements, so my shortest bi-directional would probably end up being ORD-ATL.

  17. Not quite done for the year, but here’s what it will look like assuming next week’s flights take place as planned:

  20. Sad year for me, my travel plans got cancelled so one business trip TPA-ATL-TPA on WN was all I had. One of them was on my first 737MAX, so there’s that at least, although I couldn’t tell the difference between it and all the previous late-model 737s I’ve flown on before.

    *sigh*

    1. Other than safety cards, the telltale sign that you’re on a MAX8 on WN vs. the standard -800 is deeper colors on the mood lighting. There’s other stuff like ViaSat WiFi or larger bins but those aren’t consistent across all MAXes, and maybe the bin retrofits apply to -800s as well?

  21. Miles: 74,633

Worst Flights: CM 737-Max 9 MVD-PTY Economy, Norse 787-9 MCO-LGW Economy (More the airport experience than the flight itself, which was shockingly fine, and decent Y class food)
What did I miss the most in 2023 – First and Business class
What was surprising?: I can cope in Economy if I plan ahead.
Nice surprise: Boarding a LATAM flight through the rear door and standing next to the tail (a first)
Most Shocking thing seen on a flight?: CM MDE-PTY – a woman in 10-inch heels to please her suga papa. She seemed nice, but in an emergency – hmmm. OH, obviously she was sitting in the exit row.
Best airport experience: SCL and LAX (I know, but I am one of the few that absolutely loves my adopted home airport) BER is gorgeous!
Worst airport experience: MAD Terminal 4 – One of the most gorgeous terminals, but it’s overbuilt, and the amount of walking is ridiculous. LHR Terminal 5 is just awful.
Weird airport experience: AQP – LATAM shake down the whole flight at the gate, person by person, and oh my, you’ve never seen so many vampires in one place. Yes, vampires are real (do not think movies – directly).

    1. Actually, for new aircraft, I had one flight each on the 787-8 and 787-10, therefore completing the 787 trifecta.

  41. Miles: 87,112 (84,511 last year)

  43. If it wasn’t for Dorkfest I would have been grounded the whole year. That’s depressing.

  44. Now that my air travel is done for the rest of the year…

    Miles: 55,651 (32,140 last year)
    Segments: 43 (36 last year)
One-way flights, ignoring connections: 37* (30 last year; asterisk is due to considering overnight self-connect at LAX a connection)
New Aircraft: A350-900, 737-MAX9, maybe 320neo? (hard to tell on NK)
    New Airline: Spirit
New Airports: Key West (EYW), Tel Aviv (TLV)
Most Common Aircraft: 737-700/800/900ER/MAX8/MAX9 (~24 segments)
Most Common Airline: Southwest (20 segments)
Most Common Airport: Austin (17 departures, 18 arrivals)
    Most Common Non-Directional Route: AUS-ABQ (16 segments)

Of the 737 flights, the MAX9 was United (last-minute equipment swap during the late-June snafu), the 900ER was Delta, a couple -800s were AA (might be off by one or two in favor of 319s), and the rest were WN, with an increasing share of -800/MAX8. I don’t think the -800 was my most-flown 737 variant, but unlike previous years it got close.

This was my first time at MCI since the new terminal went live (last time was 2011 I think), and first time at HOU since 2011.

Last year I predicted I’d fly less in 2023 than in 2022. I was wrong again; 2023 was my highest segment count and mile count ever, albeit still with no A220. Next year I should, for real this time, have fewer segments and miles, but will be flying a new aircraft type (A330-900neo) to a new destination (HND) at least, so that’s cool.
