Help Me Plan a Trip to NYC with Trippy

Admin
Trippy

Who wants to help me plan my trip to New York this weekend? If you have a Facebook account, log on to Trippy and help. (Use beta code “cranky” to get access.)

Trippy launched in Trippybeta yesterday, and I’m happy to be a member of the advisory council. One of the reasons I really like the advisory council idea is that Trippy is looking for real feedback to make it a better site. They’ve reached out to me and others to try to get some real usage going. So, hop on and take it for a test drive.

The idea is one you’ve heard before – it’s all about social travel planning. Sounds like a bunch of buzzword-y, but it makes sense. If I go on to many sites, I’ll just get unfiltered reviews. Why do that when I can just ask people in my network?

Of course, the problem is that I don’t want to push my friends to sign up for a new site and then make them leave a bunch of detailed reviews. That can be a real pain, so that’s why I like Trippy.

You can login with Facebook Connect, so you don’t have to sign up for yet another username and password. (If you don’t use Facebook this isn’t good, and I’ve already passed that feedback on.) You can also help me with my trip pretty easily. It doesn’t require a long review or anything like that.

So let’s take a test spin using my trip to NYC this week. Take a look and see if you can help make some recommendations.

And of course, please leave your comments about the site here. What needs to be fixed? What would make it more usable? Anything you can add will go directly to the guys at Trippy. Can’t beat having a direct feedback line like that.

In the interest of full disclosure, as always, I do get compensation for participating on the board. Still, I wouldn’t do it at all if I didn’t think there was something to it.

Check it out and see what you think.

  1. I’ll have to wait until they include an option other than Facebook Connect. I refuse to use any site or application that forces me to link it to Facebook, Google, or any other company. –There’s nobody out there yet that I actually trust to help me manage my identities (unlike what Facebook and Google would have you believe, most people will always have more than one identity online).

    1. I agree completely.
Since I’m not going to use facebook though, something interesting to see that hasn’t been mentioned yet is the Noguchi museum and sculpture parks in Astoria, Queens. http://www.noguchi.org/ It’s a bit out of the way but not nearly as ‘touristy’ as many other things.

  2. I don’t use Facebook but my first thought was “not another website for people to tie up their time with”.

Isn’t there a website mall yet with everything under one ‘roof’?

  3. I found the process of adding a location a little difficult.. It just seems to get mixed up in the searching for a location as well.

Also the website/more info text is a bit too likely just to be lost in the background. That light grey, is pretty light.

    1. I’ll second that. It was a little bit confusing though not something that couldn’t be figured out in a minute or so. Still, a clear and seamless experience is something to strive for?

  4. Also, the auto fetch of more info when looking at popular places makes it damn near impossible to click on the footer. I’m a pretty quick click, but I couldn’t get it.

  5. It would be interesting if there was a way to politely disagree with others’ recommendations. You could click ‘disagree’ and thenthe user could see an aggregate of ‘2 people recommend this place while 6 people disagree’

I agree with the other comment that the process of adding a location was a little confusing at first as there was a pause while it was looking for the location.

Cool site, though. I’d like to use it for upcoming trips! It seems to me that you could be inundated with ideas, however – especially for big cities like NYC….

  6. Hello there,

I discovered Trippy yesterday at the Techcrunch Disruptiv and i was surprised :)

I didn’t know there is a “beta code” to go on the website, but a simple search in Google make easy to find a deep link to a trip in SF (thanks trippy to indexed your pages).

I was surprised because i lead a travel projet since may (startup weekend in Toulouse, France).
The name is : TripFriender, a web app (just on Facebook right now) which make easy to know where your friends have been, in order to ask for help to plan a trip. But also to know where your friends want to go, in order to propose a trip :) TripFriender is in private BĂȘta, and public beta in a couple of weeks.
PS : i don’t help to plan a trip, but just to create trips ideas ;)

Just a question : how can i see who of my friends have been in San Francisco ? I didn’t find it… and it doesn’t work when i clicked on “Share this trip with more friends”…

I hope Trippy will have a great life, and if i can do something to help us, send me an email !

PS : I’m french, so excuse me for the english errors ;)

    Regards,

    Mathieu

  7. I, too, refuse to use Facebook (I don’t even have an account with them) to access another site, and request for such an use are banned from my repertoire !

Re New York, with Mini-Cranky on the way, you want to choose an hotel close to where you intend to go, and might want to consider kitchenettes options should your wife feel too tired in the evening to go out.
I’ve used both The Benjamin (convenient access to shops !) and the Trump (Central Park is across the street).

  8. One more who doesn’t like to log into sites with Facebook. Looking forward to helping test out the site if/when they change that.
