The EMD Safety Bracelet

Safety/Security

Here’s an invention you can file under “really bad idea that should never see the light of day.” Yes, it’s the EMD Safety Bracelet. What does EMD stand for? Electro-Muscular Disruption. Oh yeah. This nasty little device will give flight crews the ability to physically disable you with the touch of a button.

Check out this video touting the not-so-fantastic benefits of this terrible product.

I think this is my favorite part.

To a businessman on his way home to be reunited with his family or to a young family going south for a winter holiday, wearing an EMD safety bracelet for a few hours during a flight is a small inconvenience to ensure their safe arrival. We feel if given the choice between taking a flight employing the added security provided by the EMD safety bracelet system and taking a flight without the additional security, many if not most passengers would happily opt for the extra security of the EMD safety bracelet.

This is just too much. So they’re suggesting that a passenger would gladly give up their ability to control their movements to a grumpy flight crew? I think not. What if the flight attendant had a bad day and didn’t like the way you asked for a drink? Eh, just shock the passenger into submission. Yeah yeah, I’m sure that there are all kinds of safety precautions, but I’m not buying it. If you like it, head on over to learn more about the system for yourself.

  1. Wow you have to love the classic big brother is helping argument, “If you have nothing to worry about why are you worried?” Next it will be integrated into the chip the govt plants in your brain, now you know why I wear that Aluminum Foil Hat….

  2. Of course they completely miss the fact that a terrorist would have a defense against this…

I guess the TSA isn’t completely paranoid..

Although this does beg the question why we don’t have tasers onboard?

  3. Not only will the terrorists have a defense, they’ll probably have something that can set it off at will, rendering everyone ELSE in the cabin helpless.
While I am willing to take off my shoes and have my bags searched and get wanded, no way am I wearing one of these things! BAD idea!

  4. Great.

Now the drunk Mr. Doe in the seat next to me gets electrocuted, and because the frequency is probably the same as *my* bracelet–now *I* am down for the count. (Not to mention little Johnny & his parents in the row behind us!)

    Thanks alot, you drunken feeb!

  5. In order for a device like this to operate it must have contact with the skin. Put a little rubber insulator between your skin and your Big Brother Band and the shock doesn’t do anything. For more fun, use a lead clip to let it discharge into the aircraft.

  6. I figured it was being promoted by ex-government employees. It was worse than I thought – it was being promoted by Canadians!

  7. There is just so much wrong with this it is unbelievable.

Obviously old – refers to secure cockpit doors in 2003.
How does thes the air marshall/FA know which bracelet to activate?
What’s to stop the ‘terrorist’ activating the EMD on all the other pax?

This must be from the same people who said that all computers would crash on Y2K.

    Pure hysteria.

  8. I just hope our Air Marshals are better shots than portrayed in the video! That guy was spraying bullets all over the place!

  9. yea, what bullshit. i like how they’re stealing 9/11 to sell this. jerks. so yea, what happens when a “terrorist” uses the EMD? or when there’s an air mishap and passengers can’t escape because they’re incapacitated? i, for one, would not be put “at ease” by wearing one of these bracelets. besides, haven’t we all seen movies in which someone’s hand gets cut off so a bad guy can use their fingerprint to access some locked room somewhere? theft, or even loss, of these bracelets obviously doesn’t prevent the need for tickets…

  10. This seems like the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard and I doubt this will ever be in any aircraft. On an unrelated note, did you just link to “Infowars”? Aren’t they the same people that go around promoting that “9/11 was an inside job” bullshit?

  11. Mike – I don’t know much about Infowars. I found the post linked through reddit, and this post seemed to make sense to me. Even if they do have the ridiculous theory that 9/11 was an inside job, it doesn’t change that they got this post right!

  12. Mike & CF – Have you ever looked into 9/11, The london bombings, Madrid bombings, Gulf of Tonkin??

In my opinion they all inside jobs, though don’t belive me i’m only an ex. NSA agent, what would i know?

Please put down your porn just for a second and do your research people, your NAZI police state is well on its way.

  13. @ Chris:

I find myself saying to my husband more and more often as stories like this come up, “…and you think I’m wearing my tinfoil hat too tightly…” Mmmm hmmmm.

  14. The bigger point the everyone seems to be missing is that you, your friends and your family all have a greater chance of getting struck and killed by lightening than they do of being killed by any terrorist attack.

I’m amazed by the amount of people who are willing to give up freedom in order to obtain a sense of security.
